Baines eyes England recall

Leighton Baines has not given up on his England dream. After featuring in the friendlies against Egypt and Mexico, the Everton full-back was a surprise omission from Fabio Capello's World Cup squad, losing out to Stephen Warnock. Now Arsenal youngster Kieran Gibbs has leapfrogged above both men in the battle to be understudy to Ashley Cole.It is hard to see that situation changing ahead of next month's Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro, even though Baines was one of the major influences behind Everton's remarkable comeback against Manchester United on Saturday. But the 25-year-old is not allowing himself to get disheartened - and does not believe his international days are over."You never know where you are with England," Baines told the Liverpool Echo.

"Before I got my first call-up I didn't know if I was close or a million miles away."The past has proved if your form is good every week then you will get looked at. Okay, it didn't work out quite as well as it could have done but I am only 25 and there is still time." Everton FC chairman Bill Kenwright sick of prospective investors who 'go missing'

BILL Kenwright's search for a billionaire to takeover Everton is being hampered by time-wasting charlatans, the chairman has revealed. The theatre impresario said he has been misled four times in the last 10 months by potential owners who led the club to embark on costly negotiations before disappearing. Kenwright, speaking at the unveiling of a new Everton timeline at Goodison, said he was astonished at the repeated cons. He said: 'There are many people out there who purport to have the millions, even the billions, who are ready to sign the cheque. But the minute you say OK show us the funds they go missing and you don't here from them again. 'You can't put a time frame on it. I've been saying this for four or five years. I've got what I thought was close four times in the last 10 months, but it was not even close enough. Not even near.

There are people out there who would astonish you. 'They come to you and promise it's going to be done, this is the one. They ask for it to happen quickly so they can get the funds in quickly, and David can have some funds. 'But then the minute you ask to see the money you never see them again. To get to that stage each time is a lot of heart ache, hard work, and legal fees. It goes on and on. It's quite extraordinary. Now you can buy Everton Tickets for Premier League 2010-2011. Arteta pens five-year Everton deal

Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta has agreed a new five-year contract at Goodison Park, the club have announced.

The news will end speculation over the 28-year-old's future after a summer in which he has been linked with Arsenal and clubs in his native Spain.

Arteta told the club's official website: "What this summer has made me realise is how important I am to the club and how important the club is to me. The chairman and the manager wanted me to stay 120% and that makes me feel proud."

He added: "We are all seeing the club and the future in the same way and that is special - something that you don't always find.

"I believe in this squad. We have got a very strong squad now and it is getting difficult to pick an 11 because of the players we have.

"Something is happening here and I want to be a part of it."

Arteta follows Tim Cahill, Leighton Baines, Jack Rodwell and Seamus Coleman in signing a new long-term deal this summer. Toffees ban Vuvuzela

Mark Schwarzer and Tim Cahill have been named in Australia's squad for a friendly just three days before the Premier League kick-off. The Socceroos have included 13 players from their World Cup squad in the 20-man group for next Wednesday's friendly against Slovenia in Ljubljana. Galatasaray defender Lucas Neill will captain the side, with Fulham's Schwarzer in goal and Everton midfielder Cahill also involved just ahead of the new season. Emerging Socceroos and former Adelaide team-mates Bruce Djite and Nathan Burns were also named in Han Berger's party for the Australians' first game since they went out in the group stages in South Africa, but there are no places for Harry Kewell, Vince Grella, Mark Bresciano, Brett Emerton or Josh Kennedy.

National technical director Berger said Football Federation Australia (FFA) had discussed the Slovenia match with the likes of Kewell and Emerton and it was decided their interests would be better served staying with their clubs, but they will be available for the friendlies against Switzerland and Poland in September. "A number of players are not currently available, we discussed this fixture with a number of players, and it was clear that it was important for them to consolidate their positions with their clubs, they missed part of the preparation because of the World Cup," said the Dutchman, who will stand in as coach for this match before the expected announcement of the permanent replacement for Pim Verbeek later this month. "It is also in our interest that these players will be playing on a regular basis for their clubs and they are available for the matches in September and after that." Scott Chipperfield and Craig Moore have both retired from international football since the World Cup, while A-League players Jason Culina and Michael Beauchamp have also been left out with the local competition set to begin this week.

There is no recall for Middlesbrough striker Scott McDonald, who surprisingly missed out on a trip to South Africa after being cut from the squad at the penultimate stage by Verbeek. Australia squad to take on Slovenia: Nathan Burns, Tim Cahill, David Carney, Bruce Djite, Adam Federici, Richard Garcia, James Holland, Brett Holman, Mile Jedinak, Shane Lowry, Mark Milligan, Jon McKain, Lucas Neill, Jade North, Thomas Oar, Nikita Rukavytsya, Mark Schwarzer, Carl Valeri, Dario Vidosic, Luke Wilkshire.

Toffees ban Vuvuzela

Everton have joined the growing list of Barclays Premier League clubs to have banned the vuvuzela from their stadium.Tottenham, Arsenal, Sunderland, Liverpool, Birmingham and West Ham have also forbidden the World Cup's plastic trumpet for various reasons.Fears their noise could drown out safety announcements, that they could be used as missiles or their simple annoyance factor are among the objections.Everton's head of security and stadium safety officer Ray Foy said: "It isn't a case of us being killjoys, it is simply a measure which is designed to safeguard our reputation with the game's governing bodies."We have, in the past, had problems with people throwing objects onto the pitch and the Football Association has made it perfectly clear that we do face the possibility of sanctions should there be any repeat offence."I would also have to say that in the wake of the World Cup in South Africa we have received many emails from our supporters asking that we ban vuvuzelas on the grounds that they are simply irritating - but none urging us to permit their use at first-team fixtures."

No Everton return for Donovan

Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber hopes to keep Landon Donovan in his homeland for the rest of his career, dashing Everton's hopes of signing their former loanee. The 28-year-old forward impressed while on loan with the Toffees last season, but a permanent deal for the LA Galaxy ace looks increasingly unlikely. Garber commented: "He's become a real football hero.

"MLS needs football heroes and we have a great American football hero playing for us in LA, holding the torch for the sport in our country and that's very important. "I don't believe that it's something we can do without. "Landon proved in England last year on loan and he proved in South Africa that he's a world-class player and he's also proved that he loves our league and really has accepted the mantle of really being one of the leaders of the sport.

"It is my hope and my expectation that we will have him for the rest of his career, because I think the contributions that he makes are invaluable to our future success."

Moyes happy with strong squad

Everton boss David Moyes believes the squad he has assembled for the new season is the strongest since he arrived at Goodison Park from Preston North End more than eight years ago. The 47-year-old has signed Jermaine Beckford, Magaye Gueye, Jan Mucha and Joao Silva this summer while keeping all his big-name stars and is pleased with his dealings since the end of last season. After watching his team beat Melbourne Heart 2-0 in a pre-season friendly thanks to goals by Jack Rodwell and Louis Saha, Moyes said: "I think in my time at Everton we've now got as strong a squad as we've ever had so I'm looking forward to the new season and seeing how it goes. "I'm not a great goal-setter. I think you take the next game and you get on with it and you see where you end up.

"But we're ambitious and we want to do well and we've got a great desire to do better than what we've done in the past so we'll just try to keep it going and hopefully see where we end up "I thought that we needed a little bit more firepower up front and that's why we've brought Jermaine Beckford in. "Jermaine's just struggling a bit with his groin just now. He's not quite comfortable yet at training so we weren't going to use him but I felt we could get 20 minutes so I think he felt fine. "His first touch and his first movement nearly showed you why he's scored so many goals through the lower leagues. We're giving him a great opportunity to see if he can do it at the highest level."

Home FA Cup draw for Everton FC

EVERTON will host either Nottingham Forest or Birmingham City in the fourth round of the FA Cup. While Burnley will visit Anfield should the Reds manage to get past Reading in their reply a week on Wednesday. Leeds' reward for their shock win over Manchester United is a trip to Tottenham in the fourth round.

Simon Grayson's League One side, who beat the 11-times winners of the competition 1-0 at Old Trafford yesterday, travel to White Hart Lane for the clash to be held on the weekend of January 23-24. Elsewhere, holders Chelsea face a trip to Deepdale to take on Coca-Cola Championship side Preston.

Arsenal, who came from behind to defeat West Ham 2-1 at Upton Park, face another trip to Premier League opposition - Stoke. Manchester City travel to Championship side Scunthorpe, Aston Villa take on League One Brighton, while Championship rivals Southampton and Ipswich meet in the only other confirmed ties.

Managerless Bolton welcome either Sheffield United or QPR to the Reebok Stadium, while Sunderland - safely into the last 32 after Saturday's 3-0 home win over non-league Barrow - travel to Portsmouth or Coventry.

Fulham must face the winners of Accrington's tie against Gillingham, while Wigan go to either Notts County or Forest Green - the last non-league team left in the draw. Wolves will face a home tie against Crystal Palace after defeating Tranmere last night. West Brom will play Plymouth or Newcastle, while another all-Championship affair sees Bristol City or Cardiff face Leicester.

Arteta sets sights on return

Everton playmaker Mikel Arteta is hoping to be back in action within the next two months as he continues his recovery from a long-term knee injury.

The 27-year-old Spaniard has not featured for the Toffees since February, having suffered knee ligament damage in a goalless draw with Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Arteta told the Daily Post: "For the past few days I have been able to run at a good rhythm and I am starting to train with the rest of the squad.

"I don't have pain in my knee. I expect to be back on the pitch in less than two months.

"It has been hell. These types of injuries last 24-7, because you think about them all the time.

"But now, fortunately, I can say that everything is going well and all I want is to be with my team-mates and help the team.

"I have a lot left to achieve, a lot of football left inside me. Everton have from the start done everything for me. They have given me all the facilities I need and I intend to repay their faith.

"I understand that a lot of people have forgotten about me while I have been out. That's normal and I want to return to give them something to talk about."
